Labour Market Dashboard

Case Study: Regional labour market location-specific insights to drive workforce planning and economic development

Challenge

The Regional Australia Institute (RAI) is an independent think tank dedicated to building robust regional economies. They wanted to improve the interactive labour market insights provided on their website, which are used by job seekers, employers and policymakers. RAI asked Smarterknowledge to design a new Regional Jobs Guide with improved design, interactivity and insights.

Solution

Smarterknowledge designed and delivered an interactive, geographic regional labour markets dashboard based on our Commpact platform. The dashboard was designed to plug straight in to the RAI website, and included extensive visualisations of regional labour market insights. Extensive data relating to job vacancies, unemployment rates and participation rates was brought together so that it could be analysed simultaneously.

Key features of the dashboard included:

  • Designed to seamlessly fit into the RAI website, paying attention to aspect ratio, colour palette, etc.
  • Hosted by Smarterknowledge, automatically updating all source data
  • Creation of a custom index to identify labour market stability (Regional Indicator of Stable Employment), which offers a unique picture of labour market efficiency and employment stability
  • Correspondence of data across different geographic boundaries
  • The ability to compare the labour market of each location with other, peer, locations
  • Filtering of labour market metrics by occupation

Result

The Regional Jobs Guide bridges the information gap between metropolitan and regional labour markets, ensuring job seekers, employers, and policymakers have access to the most relevant data for informed decision-making in workforce planning and economic development. For example, region-specific labour market data is crucial for job seekers considering a move to the regions.

By providing the Regional Jobs Guide RAI can enable Australians to make informed decisions and ensure Australia has a thriving regional workforce.
